Mentoring Program

Our Mentoring Program aims to train adult volunteers to guide Lake County youth by building trust and modeling positive behavior. A Mentor is someone who is interested in and committed to the holistic (relational, emotional, intellectual, etc.) success and well-being of their Mentee.

Since 1991 Full Circle has recruited and trained volunteer mentors from the community who are passionate about building strong, positive, and sustainable relationships with the youth of Lake County.
Full Circle Mentoring staff recruits and trains adult volunteers to become Mentors to referred youth in Lake County. Community members, from school staff to parents, refer 4th and 5th grade youth that could benefit from an additional positive adult influence in their lives. These referred youth participate in the 4th/5th grade Mentoring Adventure after-school program run by Luciano, the Mentor Coordinator. When making a match, the Mentor Coordinator considers the interests, personalities, and life experiences of Mentors and Mentees. These considerations lay the groundwork for stronger lasting relationships between Mentors and their Mentees.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have passed all agency background checks.
Exhibit a desire to work with and be accessible to youth.
Possess warmth, openness, patience and a willingness to listen.
Show an ability to set limits and respond to supervision needs of the mentee.
Serve as a friend, coach, advocate and listener for youth.
Commit to being a mentor for at least one year.
Meet with youth at least 4-6 hours per month.
Establish and maintain weekly contact with youth.
Participate in at least one mentor training per year.
Participate in monthly mentor-youth activities as often as practicle.
Maintain regular contact with Mentoring Program Coordinator.
Support (Orientation, training, monthly communication with staff, and mentor support meetings).
Monthly planned activities for Mentors & Mentees planned by mentoring staff.
Specials for Mentors & Mentees at participating establishments.
Free equipment use for Mentors & Mentees thanks to partnering organizations.

Program Elements

Adventure SEL Groups

This out-of-school time program is open to 4th and 5th grade youth living in Lake County who have been referred to Full Circle by a teacher or social/healthcare worker who are referred to Full Circle by a professional within the school or health care system.
Youth in Mentoring Adventure SEL groups participate in both a wide-variety of prosocial activities, including indoor and outdoor recreation, arts & crafts, etc. and in Random Acts of Kindness curriculum-based lessons and kindness projects.
Youth develop peer relationships, try new and different activities, and develop SEL skills with the support of program staff. These youth are eligible to be paired with a mentor in the Mentor Match portion of Mentoring program. Transportation and snacks are provided by Full Circle at each activity.
The groups meet weekly after-school and on some Fridays.
Mentor Matching

Full Circle of Lake County recruits and trains adult volunteers in the community to be mentors to referred youth in the program. Community members, from school staff to parents, refer to the program 4th and 5th grade youth that could benefit from an additional positive adult influence in their lives.
Our Mentor Coordinator, Giulia, pairs these youth with trained volunteer mentors and these match pairs spend about 1 hour per week together. Full Circle offers monthly activities for mentors and youth to attend (or participate in remotely) all together.
The match program provides an additional trusted, positive, supportive adult relationship in the lives of participating youth and both youth and adult participants develop greater connection to the community.
